I can not think of anything to say

that would make anyone feel anything

because I am trying not to feel

because to feel is to welcome the despair that awaits

imagining that we have collectively decided

to be just okay with the possibility

that you could send your child to school

and never see their small bodies bounce through your door again

and we have decided that it is okay

because as long as it is not our turn

we can offer empty yet well-meaning

thoughts prayers and heartbreak

and I for one am terrified

to know just how many more ways

a heart can truly break.
